The Village
There are a lot of reasons to hate this movie. I know. But, for some reason, whenever it’s on, I can’t help but watch it. Maybe it’s my penchant for bad movies? Maybe it’s my endless curiousity for Joaquin Phoenix? Subtle symbolism in the story? I do adore Bryce Dallas Howard.
I do know I abhor the ending.
And I do know this. There are two times in the movie when Bryce Dallas Howard’s character, who is blind, holds out her hand in hopes of Joaquin Phoenix taking it. Both times he does. The simplicity of this silent gesture, the way they film it, everything about how the two of them interact, it somehow grabs the inner romantic in me and throttles it saying, “Watch, again, goddamnit!”
It’s on right now and the Phillies are postponed, so I’m screwed. Stuck watching it.
